FAQ

Welcome to our FAQ section! Here, we aim to address some common questions you may have about chiropractic care, our clinic, and the services we offer. If you don't find the answers you're looking for, feel free to reach out to us directly.

  • Why does the address show SOL Santa Cruz?
Redwood Spine and Mobility rents space from within SOL Santa Cruz, so you may see their name on maps or signage. Just head inside, you're in the right place!
  • What clothing should I wear to my appointment?
Loose fitting clothing or athleisure is ideal. Something that you can comfortably move in. Direct skin contact may be required for treatment purposes, so clothing like thick sweaters, or denim jeans can sometimes make it difficult.
  • Is there a cancellation or no-show fee?
Yes. You will be charged a fee for cancellations within 24 hours of your appointment or if you don't show up for your appointment. We set aside time specifically for you, and when appointments are missed or canceled late, it impacts our ability to help other patients. The fee helps cover the lost time and keeps our schedule running smoothly so everyone gets the care they need. If something unexpected comes up, let us know as soon as possible and we’ll do our best to work with you!
  • How long are appointments?
    Initial Appointment = 45 mins Standard Follow-Up = 30 mins
  • What can I expect on my first visit?
Your first visit will last approximately 45 minutes. It will consist of history taking, a movement assessment, a physical exam, an orthopedic exam, possibly special tests dependent upon your condition and will end with treatment. We will also discuss any concerns you have and agree upon the treatment plan moving forward. Your care is collaborative.
  • What forms do I have to fill out prior to my appointment?
First Visit - You will be required to complete an intake form and other possible surveys related to your complaint. This will include personal information required to have on your medical file, your health history and an informed consent. Follow-up visits - After your first visit, typically no other forms are required unless it's a re-examination or special circumstances.
  • Will I be adjusted on my first visit?
In most cases, yes. If the exam shows it is clinically appropriate the treatment will at minimum consist of a chiropractic adjustment. View the "Treatment" section for more information on chiropractic care.
  • Where can I park?
There is plenty of street parking in the surrounding streets and neighborhood (Seabright Ave & Hanover St). There are also a few parking spaces in the back of the building. Take the small driveway to the right of the office and head under the overhang (6.5ft MAX).
  • Do you offer home appointments?
Home appointments will be considered depending on proximity to office. It should be understood that equipment and services will be limited based upon what can be carried and transported to the residence. Prices may vary depending on distance from office. Please email or text to get more information.
  • Is there wheelchair access?
Treatment While it is possible for wheelchair access to the building and treatment room, there is very limited space. Motorized wheelchair access to rooms will not be possible due to space limitations. Parking There is no designated handicap parking, but there are parking spaces in the back behind the building with room for wheelchair access. Bathroom The largest bathroom we have is unable to accommodate space for a wheelchair to fit inside. If you are aware of these limitations and still would like to be treated, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
  • Do I need a referral to see a Chiropractor?
No referral is needed. You can book directly through us!
  • Do you take Insurance?
Yes! We currently accept Medicare and Anthem Blue Cross PPO patients. However, we are working on becoming a provider TriWest and more! We can provide you with a Superbill, which you can then submit to your insurance to receive a reimbursement. We recommend reaching out to your insurance prior to booking an appointment to find out your Out Of Network (OON) coverage and instructions for submitting a Superbill.
  • Can I pay in cash?
Yes! If you can pay in exact change, that would be greatly appreciated. Payment with credit card is our preference.
  • Is Chiropractic treatment safe?
Yes! Chiropractic care is generally considered safe when performed by a licensed and trained professional. SUPPORTING INFO: Many people think chiropractic care is solely spinal adjustments (also known as Spinal Manipulative Therapy), but chiropractors provide a range of treatments, including soft tissue therapy, rehab exercises, lifestyle advice, and more. While spinal manipulation is a hallmark of chiropractic care, it's also performed by other healthcare providers like osteopaths, physical therapists, naturopaths, and even acupuncturists. The latest clinical guidelines and research support the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic care, particularly for musculoskeletal conditions like low back pain. In fact, the American College of Physicians recommends spinal manipulation as a first-line treatment for acute and chronic low back pain. Still skeptical? Malpractice insurance premiums for chiropractors are dramatically lower than those for medical doctors — often around $1,000 per year compared to $100,000 — reflecting both the lower risk associated with chiropractic care and the rarity of successful claims filed against chiropractors.
  • Do adjustments hurt?
Most are gentle with the feeling of pressure building followed by a popping noise and release of tension. However, if you have low back pain and a low back adjustment is being performed, there will most likely be some discomfort since we are working in that area.
  • What's the popping noise during an adjustment?
It's not your bones rubbing together! During an adjustment, a High Velocity Low Amplitude thrust is performed on a joint(s). This causes the joint surfaces to separate slightly and fast enough to cause a sudden drop in pressure. This is followed by the dissolved gasses in the joint forming microscopic bubbles and then collapse or "cavitate". This cavitation is the popping noise we hear. It’s a normal, harmless phenomenon, and research shows it doesn’t cause damage or wear. In fact, that small “release” often brings increased joint mobility and a sense of relief afterward. TLDR: It's the popping of tiny gas bubbles when the joint is slightly stretched during an adjustment. It's the same as when you crack your knuckles and it is harmless with benefits of pain relief and increased range of motion.
  • Can I see a Physical Therapist for an Adjustment?
It's possible and will depend on the physical therapist. Not all physical therapists perform Grade 5 mobilizations (adjustments); many use gentler forms of mobilization. In most physical therapy programs, very little time is devoted to learning adjustment techniques. That said, some physical therapists do invest extra effort to refine this skill. In contrast, chiropractors begin learning adjustments in their first year and continue practicing them throughout a three-year Doctor of Chiropractic program, spending countless hours perfecting the art of adjusting.
  • Will I be sore after treatment?
Most likely! The most common side effect of treatment is mild soreness, similar to post-workout tightness, that generally lasts for a couple days. Our goal is to move tissue that has not been moving properly for some time, the soreness you may experience is a normal response from your body adjusting to these changes.
  • What if I don't want to be adjusted?
If you are unwilling to participate in our plan of care, we would recommend searching for another provider. Spinal Manipulation Therapy is a cornerstone of our treatment approach to improving range of motion, leading to greater function and decreased pain. Therefore, patients should expect to be adjusted on their first and all subsequent visits. Drop-Table can be used as an alternative treatment method.
  • Can my pain be fixed in one visit?
Most people get significant relief with just one treatment! However, patients should not expect full resolution of their symptoms with one visit. This is especially true for patients suffering from chronic issues.
  • Will I need to see a chiropractor for the rest of my life?
No. Our goal is to give you the power and tools to manage your own symptoms. You will always be in control of your own care. Granted, some chronic issues can only be managed with conservative care measures. We are happy to provide relief from that pain, but we will strive to make sure you can take care into your own hands.
  • How many visits will I need?
After your initial appointment, an individualize care plan will be created to fit your needs. A typical care plan will consist of 12 visits with a re-exam at the end to assess your progress and determine the next steps: additional visits, spaced out visits, additional tests, or referral to a specialist.
  • What adjusting techniques do you use?
Diversified is the primary adjustment technique used. It is the most widely taught, used and supported adjusting method backed by research. We have the option of using Drop-Table for individuals that are unable to tolerate an adjustment, but the Drop-Table assessment is not used. Drop-Table is preferred by some individuals for its comfort and less positional stress placed on the body.
  • Do you use your hands or an instrument to adjust?
Hands on adjustments will be performed using the Diversified technique.
  • Do you offer ART or Graston?
No, but we offer similar non-trademarked care referred to as Instrumented Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) and Pin and Stretch. More info: Active Release Technique (ART) and Graston are trademark names that require spending hundreds of hours at seminars and paying thousands of dollars for a certification to use their name and specific technique. There are some studies show positive results from these specific techniques, but also conflicting current evidence shows no difference in patient outcomes between trademark and non-trademark care.
  • Do you offer Laser, Shockwave or Ultrasound?
We only offer Ultrasound at this time. If there is enough demand, these can be offered in the near future.
  • Do you preform X-rays?
No. We do not perform x-rays at this clinic. We can give recommendations to local business that specialize in taking x-rays or MRIs.
  • What conditions do chiropractors treat?
Chiropractors are well known for treating low back and neck pain, but we also manage a variety of other conditions, including headaches, migraines, jaw pain, shoulder pain, thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, joint pain, arthritis, and more. A conservative management plan should always be the first step in addressing a chronic or acute musculoskeletal injury rather than immediately opting for surgery. Acute trauma such as car accidents, broken bones, sudden loss of breath, chest pain, loss of bowel control and other such injuries should always seek hospital care prior to seeking alternative treatments.
  • Do you adjust pregnant patients?
Yes! We also have a table that can make lying face down comfortable, and steps will be taken to minimize the amount of time you are laying face up.
  • Are you certified in Webster technique?
No. Our standard assessment will be used to determine how to treat pregnant patients. The Webster technique is an assessment used to determine how to adjust pregnant patients.
  • Do you treat children or infants?
No. 16yrs is the youngest preferred age for treatment. If you are looking for infant specific chiropractic care, we recommend Crandell Chiropractic in Felton.
  • Do you work with other healthcare providers?
Yes! We believe collaboration between your health care providers is essential for your recovery and general well-being. Provide your doctor(s) information in the new patient forms and we are happy to send our notes and updates regarding your recovery to them.
  • What’s the difference between chiropractic and physical therapy?
Chiropractic Focuses on performing adjustments and soft tissue mobilization to relieve pain and increase your mobility. Physical therapy Primarily uses soft tissue mobilization techniques and targeted exercises to improve strength, mobility and decrease pain. Both complement each other and can even co-manage patient cases at the same time. Chiropractors can be an excellent primary option for individuals experiencing low back or neck pain (or other conditions) that hinders exercise and limits range of motion. Non-pharmacological pain relief strategies employed by Chiropractors enable you to engage in exercise, build functional strength, and ultimately achieve long-term pain relief.
  • Can chiropractic help with headaches, sciatica, or other conditions?
Yes! We can help with those and many more. Schedule a visit with us to find out more!
  • What’s your approach to care? Short‑term relief, long‑term wellness, or both?
Both. At Redwood S&M, our primary goal is to provide you with effective short-term pain relief while equipping you with the tools needed to maintain a pain-free lifestyle. If you experience a flare-up, you can always return for a brief course of care. We understand that every patient's situation is unique; while many conditions can be managed with short-term care, some chronic issues may require long-term conservative management.
  • Are you re-aligning bones?
No. Chiropractors cannot actually move bones into different positions. The term "realignment" is outdated and a simplified term to explain how we restore motion and biomechanics into the spine. We are primarily restoring normal motion and function to joints that are not moving properly.
  • Do I need to keep coming forever?
No. While we would love to see your beautiful face as often as possible, we have to set our boundaries.
  • Is chiropractic just for back pain?
No. It's what we are really good at, but we can do so much more. We can help manage many muscular, joint, and nerve related issues. See more in our Conditions page!
  • Is one of my legs really longer than the other?
Probably! However, it's typically not caused by the bones in one of your leg being longer than the other (although it can happen). More commonly this discrepancy is caused by muscle tension, joint dysfunction or posture. Schedule a visit with us today and we can help you find out!
  • What's the role of Chiropractic care for treating muscle, bone and nerve conditions?
At Redwood S&M we like to think of ourselves as the first step for treating joint, muscle and nerve related issues. We use a hands-on and drug-free approach to treat your condition before you jump straight to surgery. However, for those that have had an unsuccessful approach to Allopathic medicine (pharmaceutical and surgery), we can also provide a different perspective and treatment for your condition.
